Bay to Breakers Race 2002

The Bay to Breakers race is a huge 12k run through San Francisco with nearly 70,000 runners. It starts at the Bay, winds through the city and Golden Gate Park, and ends at the breakers (see www.baytobreakers.com for info). Notorious for crazy costumes, or a lack of costumes (and clothing), the run has few actual racers attempting to race. Really, it is just a big party. Some of the things you'll see are hoards of Elvises, Fred Flintstone on a thirty foot brontosaurus, several dozen people dressed as Salmon running against the stream of people, and an entire mobile tiki bar, equipped on board with six or seven bartenders. Oh, and you better watch out for tens of thousands of flying tortillas. We had to get up awful early to get to SF by 8 o'clock for the race start. Kudos to those who made it out. The run this year was fun to do but kind of rainy afterwards. Whatever. All good times for the Stanford "Rain? What is Rain?" Running Club.

Wake up! Dan does the controversial "yawn" stretch

"It's 0600. What does the 0 stand for? Oh my God it's early!"  (from "Good Morning Vietnam" for you kiddies.)  Lucy says, "Get that #@^& camera out of my face."

Here's a picture of the solar car van and some people in the way. The van had a worktable good for holding the Krispy Kreme doughnuts we had for breakfast.

We is goin' to duh races! Hoo-raa.

Are those?...Yes they are! Flying tortillas add to the pre-race confusion. (That's the bay bridge in the background...)

The three stooges. Alright Jon, you can be a stooge too.
(L to R: Eloy, Dan, Jon, Ben) And yet another holding the camera.

Good thing people brought kegs filled with...Gatorade. People get thirsty on the run.

And we're off! The racers (walkers) finally take off 12 minutes after the gun.

The front of a tiki bar being carried by a bunch of Hawaiian-clad people.

Alec and I reach the two mile mark. My, we are flying.
I think the others have finished by now.

Brian: "There must be...a hundred people here! At least ten times my seminar. Wow. Maybe even two hundred!"

A stairway to heaven...oh, nope, it plummets back down after this.

We've left the "city" and are now in Golden Gate Park. Soon comes two miles of downhill to the finish. (Alec's waving to a fan...or making scary faces at a child...one of the two.)

Those who didn't pay for a number have to go around the finish. Look, here's a freeloader now!

"It's so c-c-cold. I can't feel my f-f-face." "What? I can't hear. My ears just froze off!"

Nothing like some steamy public transit back to the start to warm ya up.
