The club runs together in races around the area. Often, they start and finish right on campus. Races are usually not events for extreme pain but rather places for you to see what you can do or for a good workout. Plus, for less than ten dollars, races are a cheap way to get t-shirts and all the free food and drink you could want (gotta love that coffee cake.) Plus, you get to be cheered by the club.

We've run many more races than these (like Theta Breakers, Go with the Flow, that 4 mile one where Frosh Dan came in second by a second, Napa Marathon, etc.) Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find all the times. If you have your own or others, please do send them to me.

Theta Breakers 2003

Theta Breakers 2003 was a great day for the running club. It was all about sweeping. We swept every team award (top 3 five-person 5k teams, top 3 two-person 5k teams, and top 10k team). We had the top two finishers for the 5k (Jason Detwiler and Matt Tompkins) and numerous other top-race awards for Susan Su, Darcy Dugan, Pratap Ranade, Aaron Mintz, Kristin Schleicher, and several others. Look at the smiling faces. Everyone had a good time. The $100+ prizes won were (rather will be, at the time this was written) used for a team dinner at Compadres that night.

Portland Marathon 2003

This race was pretty amazing. Megan won the women's race and qualified for the US Olympic Trials by breaking 2:48! Patrick got sixth, breaking the 19-and-under age record by twelve minutes! (If you look at his splits, Patrick was solid as a rock.) Truman Scarborough and Josh Ruderman were also happy with their times, qualifying for the Boston Marathon.

Go With the Flow 2003

Club members were not disappointed in this race's second year around the lake. Members Aaron Mintz, Darcy Dugan, David Li, and Karen Loh showed up bright'n early to flow for this laid-back competition whose organizers spent no time getting it into action after the school's start. Leaving from the Frost Amphitheater and heading out through the quad, past the lake, and back, this race was almost entirely dominated by Aaron Mintz, who went on to win it.

Napa Marathon 2003

Wine tasting was not on the agenda for members of the Stanford Running Club as they travelled to Napa Valley last weekend.  Rather, it was carbo-loading and water as they prepared for Sunday's Napa Valley Marathon, which ran a 26.2-mile course from Calistoga to Napa past vineyards along the scenic Silverado Trail.
The race began at 7:00 Sunday morning, with temperatures in the low 30s and the sun still hidden behind the hills that lined the west side of Silverado Trail.  However, as the sun emerged, the morning became perfect for running, clear and cool.  "I don't think we could have asked for better weather," said freshman Noah Lang, an experienced marathoner.  Of the eight marathons he's now run, "This was the most beautiful," he said.
Other Running Club members were running their first marathon, but several did quite well nonetheless.  Sophomore Dan Anthony and Graduate Student Ben Cowan placed first and second in their division (30th and 60th out of 2,200 runners overall) with times of
2:57:52 and 3:06:28, respectively, both qualifying for next year's Boston Marathon.  Lang came second in his division, with a personal record of 3:39:50.  And freshman Pam Morganroth won her division as well, finishing her first marathon in 4:15:12.  She said, "At the halfway point, I thought, 'This is really hard.'  But by mile 17 or 18, I knew I could do it."  Full results for the marathon can be obtained from the race web site, at www.napa-marathon.com.
The race was well organized, with plenty of support for the runners. Aid stations with water and Gatorade, and orange and banana slices later in the course, were placed every 2-3 miles.  "There were lots of aid stations, and the volunteers were eager to help out," said Morganroth.  Many spectators lined the course as well to cheer on the runners.  "The spectators were really supportive."  Some even offered treats such as sorbet and watermelon.
For all the difficulty of running a marathon, the runners enjoyed the experience.  "It was far more rewarding and enjoyable than I thought such pain could be.  I look forward to Boston.  It was definitely an experience worth repeating," said Anthony.

Home Depot 2003

Well, the weather was good and, except for three miles of coastal head wind from mile 9 to mile 12 (ouch), the course was fast. The 5k guys were awesome too; they waited around for an hour to cheer us half-marathoner on. Thanks to Ben for his house and rabbit-eared TV, and thanks to Eloy for the van -- capable of reaching 97 mph on the way back and capable of annoying everyone else on the road with its PA system. Click here for more pictures.

Silicon Valley Marathon
Megan Daly, now an experienced marathoner, placed first in her age group and second overall. She came through the half at 1:24:57.9 and the second half in 1:28:04.4, finishing in 2:53:05.7! Nice medal.

9th Annual Stanford Powwow Fun Run
This race, advertised as a "5k," was actually much shorter, meaning that everyone "PRed." Comparatively, the club did well and all of us got a clay "medal." All in all, the race was good, with a small number of racers, a flat course, and lots of "free" stuff given out. Click here for some pictures from the race.
